Dyson may design robotic vacuum cleaners that can climb stairs

British appliance maker Dyson is working on robotic vacuum cleaners that can climb stairs and interact with home environments designed for interactions with humans.

The patent notes that the homes are designed for “navigation and manipulation” by humans, who are “extremely complex biological” entities. As a result, these environments are difficult for robots to navigate.

Dyson has designed robots that use a set of “tri-star wheels” or “actuated arms,” allowing it to climb stairs and navigate unbalanced surfaces in many homes. had a patent published on September 1 in the UK and there is no confirmation that the company is actually going to bring such devices to market. “The present invention can be used to implement an autonomous home robot,” the patent reads.

However, when it comes to vacuuming homes, Dyson is known for pushing the boundaries in terms of technology. The new patent describes robots that can not only navigate stairs but grab things, which can be used for a variety of use-cases. In the photos, Dyson shows not only robots that can climb stairs, but also one that seems to be able to open drawers.

It also states that autonomous robots can function “off-floor”, meaning they can reach areas the robot’s body would not otherwise be able to reach. Which appears to be an attempt to make floor-cleaning robots that are smarter than those sold by companies like Roomba and Xiaomi right now. Robots like the Mi Vacuum Cleaner claim to be able to navigate around obstacles in a house and clean floors.

The devices Dyson’s patented description, on the other hand, appear to be a lot more advanced than the floor cleaning solutions we’ve seen so far.
