Every year on 22 April, the world celebrates Earth Day, which reflects the work we do to reverse climate change and save the environment. Vehicular pollution is considered a major challenge in combating pollution globally and governments around the world are working hard to reduce this pollution. Electric vehicles are a category that has been promoted to replace traditional ICE-engined vehicles to reduce pollution.

While many countries, especially in Europe and China, have come a long way by incorporating EVs into mainstream transportation, India is slowly adopting the trend as well. In a country like India, where money is the most important consideration before buying any vehicle, it is imperative for automakers to launch affordable EVs to drive further penetration. Tata Tigor EV

Tata Motors, India’s domestic automaker recently launched the new Tigor EV in India for Rs 11.99 lakh, making it India’s cheapest electric car. The new Tigor EV features Ziptron technology and has an (claimed) 312 km electric range. The older generation Tigor is now sold as the Express-T only to fleet owners.

Tata Nexon EV

Tata Nexon EV is the best selling electric car in India and it was launched in 2019 as the cheapest electric SUV in India which was around Rs 6 to 7 lakh cheaper than its nearest rival. The Tata Nexon EV gets a 30.2 kWh battery pack that promises a range of 312 km on a single charge. At the front is a permanent magnet synchronous motor that delivers 129PS of power and 245Nm of torque.

Hyundai Kona

The Hyundai Kona Electric was the first electric SUV to be launched in India and is priced at Rs 23.79 lakh. It gives the highest mileage for any EV under Rs 25 lakh. The Hyundai Kona Electric gets a 39.2-kWh-hour lithium-ion polymer battery which, according to Hyundai, offers an ARAI claimed range of 452 km.

MG ZS EV

MG Motor India recently launched the updated ZS EV in India with extended range and minor body changes. The updated ZS EV 2021 is priced at Rs 20.99 lakh and can be bought in two variants – Excite and Exclusive. The MG ZS EV is powered by a 44.5 kWh battery and has a certified range of 419 km. The motor churns out 143bhp and 350Nm of torque which gets it from a standstill to 100kmph in just 8.5 seconds.
