  • James Drinkwater calls three little pigs tiny using natural ingredients
  • A climate organization expert says ‘perceptions need to change’
  • In a childhood story the wolf blows up houses made of sticks and straw

An environmentalist has said that the children’s story, Three Little Pigs, makes fun of eco-friendly materials.

James Drinkwater said the Big Bad Wolf, which blew up two out of three houses made of straw and sticks, sends the message that natural materials are not suitable for construction.

In a childhood classic, first printed in the 1840s, only the house made of bricks remains standing.

in a talk organized by Sea Last month, Mr Drinkwater, head of the built environment at the philanthropic organization Lloyd’s Foundation, said: ‘There’s a classic story called Three Little Pigs in England.

‘The first built his house out of straw and that natural material was terrible.

‘Concepts need to change to show what is possible.’

Lod’s Foundation has projects working towards the construction of zero carbon buildings, focusing on the use of wood, which is considered one of the eco-friendly building materials.

In October it announced a new fund called Built by Nature, which the organization described as ‘a multi-million euro grant-making fund to accelerate timber construction transformation across Europe’.

Mr Drinkwater said during the conversation: ‘We really need to work with nature, which is our strongest tool to get on that negative emissions track.

‘We know that science says forests provide our best hope.’
