Education Ministry releases report on performance grading index for states

New Delhi: The Education Ministry on Thursday released the Performance Grading Index (PGI) for 2020-21, an evidence-based comprehensive analysis of the school education system across states and union territories.

The Education Ministry said that the main objective of PGI is to promote evidence-based policy making and highlight curriculum reforms to ensure quality education for all.

“The Indian education system is one of the largest in the world with about 14.9 lakh schools, 95 lakh teachers and around 265 million students from different socio-economic backgrounds. DoSE&L (Department of School Education and Literacy) prepared PGI for States/UTs to provide insights on performance and achievements and data-driven mechanism on school education success in all States/UTs,” the ministry said. The department has so far released the PGI reports for the years 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20, said a statement.

The PGI structure consists of 1,000 points out of 70 indicators, which are divided into two categories – Outcomes and Governance Management. These categories are further divided into 5 domains, viz., Learning Outcomes (LO), Access (A), Infrastructure and Facilities (IF), Equity (E) and Governance Process (GP).

As in the previous years, PGI 2020-21 has categorized the States/UTs into ten grades, the highest achievable grade being Level 1, the States/UTs scoring more than 950 marks out of a total of 1000 marks. for Union Territories. The lowest grade level is 10 for scores below 551. The ultimate objective of PGI is to motivate the States and UTs to undertake multi-pronged interventions that will bring the desired optimum education outcomes covering all dimensions. It is expected that the PGI will help the States and Union Territories to bridge the gaps and accordingly prioritize areas for intervention to ensure that the school education system is robust at all levels.

“A total of 7 states and union territories, Kerala, Punjab, Chandigarh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh have achieved Level II (score 901-950) in 2020-21 as compared to none in 2017-18 and 2019- 4. Out of 20 Gujarat, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh are the new entrants at the highest achieved level of any state so far,” the ministry said.

The newly formed Union Territory, Ladakh has made a significant improvement in PGI from Level 8 to Level 4 in 2020-21 or 299 points in its score in 2020-21 as compared to 2019-20, resulting in singles so far. has improved the most. year.

“The PGI scores and grades obtained by the States/UTs in 2020-21 testify to the efficacy of the PGI system. Indicator-wise PGI scores indicate the areas where a state needs improvement. The PGI will reflect the relative performance of all the States/UTs on a uniform scale which encourages them to perform better and adopt the best practices followed by the artists.”
