Effect of EV policy in Delhi, most electric vehicles of bikes in the national capital in December 2022

BK to account for a significant 16.8% share in Electric Vehicle (EV) sales in Delhi in December 2022. This is the highest ever monthly EV contribution by any state in India. If hybrid-petrol sales become significant, the contribution will increase to 20.5% for the month. In December, Delhi registered 7,046 electric vehicles with a blueprint increase of 86%. The Delhi EV Policy was launched on 7th August 2020 wherein 2 Wheeler (2W) and 3 Wheeler (3W) have been placed as the important priority vehicle quantities.

The Delhi EV policy aims to promote electric criticality so that it can be rapidly adopted. Under this, the target is that by 2024 all new vehicles sold should be 25% EV. In February 2021, Arvind Kejriwal launched the Switch Delhi campaign to spread awareness about the important role that electricity plays in making Delhi clean and completely pollution-free. With EV sales in the month of December, Delhi is closer to its mission of achieving two-thirds of its target.

After the launch of the policy, 93,239 electric vehicles have been registered in Delhi till 31 December 2022. Of these, 5,189 have been registered in 2020 (7th August 2020 to 31st December 2020), 25,809 Electric Fibers have been registered in 2021, while 62,241 Electric Fibers have been registered in 2022. This year EV sales have increased by 141% compared to 2021. If compare India’s EV sales, in 2022 total 10.03 lakh EVs are allocated in the country and contributing 4.73% of EV sales while Delhi’s EV contribution was higher at 10.24%.

Delhi has seen significant sales of two wheelers plummeting. High speed 2 wheelers to contribute around 55% of sales in 2022 as compared to 29% in 2021. Whereas e-standard, electric auto and luggage carrier contributed 35% of sales. Under 4 wheelers, private car registration was higher than that of commercial cabs. The bus segment contributed a good 0.6%, where a total of 399 buses are registered in 2022. Data on e-cycles has not been included as these are not registered under RTO. Already 500+ e-cycles have been sold in Delhi since the announcement of the incentive scheme on e-cycles in June 2022.
