Eight people from Sri Lanka, including three children, reached Dhanushkodi Palam North Beach and were brought to the Mandapam rehabilitation camp on Monday.

The Marine Police said eight people from Sri Lanka’s Jaffna and Thalaimannar districts reached Indian waters on a chartered ship late Sunday night.

On receiving the information, the Indian Coast Guard officials brought them to the shore.

Preliminary inquiries revealed that the Sri Lankan nationals sold their valuables and paid ₹1 lakh to bring the sailors to Tamil Nadu as they were finding it difficult to survive in their beleaguered country.

Police have identified them as V. Karthik, 26, Ratnam Ranjit, 59, Shahul Hamid, 54, Geeta Kumari, 27, Dwarkan, 6, Niranjan, 2, Mitra, 2 and Bilendra Kumari, 32.

After questioning him and recording his statement, the police handed him over to the camp authorities at Mandapam.
