Employees strike: Most Lufthansa flights from Frankfurt and Munich canceled on Wednesday – Times of India

New Delhi: The situation at European airports is going from bad to worse this summer. On Wednesday (27 July) almost all Lufthansa flights operating from Frankfurt and Munich have been canceled due to the strike of the Group Staff Union ver.di.
Five Lufthansa Flights The schedule for Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai to be operated from these two hubs on Wednesday has been cancelled. Return flights operating these aircraft have also been cancelled. In addition, flights from these two German hubs to India and other destinations on Tuesday will now fly on Thursday – not as scheduled on Wednesday – when the strike ends.
In such a situation, the effect of one-day strike will remain till almost Friday. Passengers affected by the cancellation will be informed immediately today and rebooking on alternate flights, if possible. However, the available capabilities for this are very limited, the airline says.
In a statement, Lufthansa spoke about the “massive impact” of the ver.di strike, saying “almost all Lufthansa flights to Frankfurt and Munich were canceled for Wednesday.”
“The warning strike announced by trade union ver.di is having massive operational impact in the middle of the peak travel season. Lufthansa will have to curtail almost its entire flight schedule at its centers in Frankfurt and Munich for Wednesday. Lufthansa is working diligently to get flight operations back to normal as soon as possible. Nevertheless, the impact of the strike may still result in individual flight cancellations or delays on Thursday and Friday,” the statement said.
In Frankfurt, a total of 678 flights will have to be cancelled, including 32 for today (Tuesday) and 646 on Wednesday. This is expected to affect 92,000 passengers. At the Munich hub, a total of 345 flights will have to be cancelled, 15 of them today (Tuesday) and 330 on Wednesday. It is expected that 42,000 passengers will be affected, it said.
Michael Niegemann, chief human resources officer and labor director at Deutsche Lufthansa AG, says: “The early growth of the first creative collective bargaining round is taking a toll. And this is putting additional heavy pressure on our employees in an already difficult period for air traffic. Our high offers with very high pay increases over the next 12 months in pay groups up to 3,000 Euro monthly basic salary And given a 6 percent increase to the monthly basic pay of 6,500 euros, so-called warning strikes occur in the midst of peak heat, the travel season is no longer proportionate.”
