England beat India by 7 wickets in the rearranged 5th Test

England leveled the series 2-2 after beating India by seven wickets in the fifth Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Tuesday.

378 sets for the win, England finished on 378-3, with Joe Root (142) and Jonny Bairstow (114). Both the players shared 269 runs for the fourth wicket and achieved the target of 378 runs.

Root shared an unbeaten 142 for the fourth wicket with Bairstow at Edgbaston, scoring 142 not out, his 28th Test century.

The win saw England level this five-match series at 2-2.

Root scored his third Test century of the season with an unbeaten 142 – his second century of the Test and fourth in his last five innings.

No team had achieved more than 359 wins in the fourth innings of the first Test by England, when now-captain Ben Stokes’ century gave them a thrilling victory over Australia at Headingley three years earlier.

It was England’s fourth consecutive successful run chase after beating New Zealand 3-0 under new captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum last month.

Reaction to India’s defeat in Rescheduled Fifth Test Former India head coach Ravi Shastri said Team India’s “sneaky” and “defensive” batting approach in the second innings allowed England to bounce back on the fourth day, reports news agency PTI.

“I think (it) was disappointing, to say the least, as they could have knocked England out of this competition,” Shastri said.
