Debutant Matthew Potts said England cricketers will continue to “throw punches” at Lord’s after 17 wickets fell on the first day of their first Test against New Zealand.

England have promised to woo fans with an aggressive brand of cricket and were on course to bowl out the tourists for 132 at Lord’s for an impressive start to the international summer.

The 23-year-old Potts dismissed New Zealand captain Kane Williamson for two before removing Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell and Ajaz Patel as England bundled out New Zealand for 132 on the opening day of the first Test.

The Durham pacer has been an outstanding bowler in the County Championship this year, taking 35 wickets at 18.57 each.

Potts told Sky Sports, “It was a great start. It was nice to get a few wickets early to calm the nerves. We bowled aggressively and tried to take wickets.”

“A big part of my success is going to my family. It’s a testament to their hard work as well as mine. It was a great achievement. I’m really, really overwhelmed by it.”

“I had a little tear in my eyes this morning and I can only imagine that my parents will have tears in their eyes too.”

England began their new era on a grand note under captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum, with impressive bowling and slow catches, but a familiar batting collapse left them 16 for seven behind New Zealand at 116 for seven.
