Escaype Live Review: A commendable effort by Siddharth-Shweta Tripathi series

It was only a matter of time before one realized how social media exacerbates a particular form of duality within an individual. If not, the last two years certainly bring to the fore how likes, comments and hashtags lead to social media vigilantes, shifting opinions and contributing to a constructed discourse. new Hotstar The show Escape Live perhaps attempts to show that end of the iceberg; In this, the show of Siddharth Kumar Tiwari is successful to an extent.

Despite its futuristic office setting, the plot is simple. There is an app and it is hosting an online 30-day contest; Win it and you have 3 crores in your bank. Just like in real life, contestants line up. They are from different backgrounds – metros and villages, rich and poor, and of course the good and the bad.

The similarity with Tik-Tok is well known. There is instant fame and all you have to do is make the reels for those likes. There is a smart twist to it though. The artist earns likes and ‘diamonds’. These diamonds can be reimbursed for real money, with the application company taking its share. The company wants to make stars, change lives and fulfill its ulterior motives. It’s pretty clear that business is a priority, and the extent to which these characters go to claim the bounty moves the story forward.

Now we do not get the answer even after watching seven episodes of 40-45 minutes. that’s because
The finale episode will air on May 27. Here’s the deal, maybe the makers jumped the gun and thought they made a sit-of-the-seat thriller and viewers would jump to watch the conclusion on 27th and eventually the website of Hotstar (a long shot) crashes. Will go Or the makers felt that continuous watching till 27th would immerse them in the show and binge-watching was never the intention. Either way, there’s a lot here to get your attention, and then there are reasons you might be leaving it halfway.

The performances are fascinating. No one is trying to intellectualize these characters. They surround us in our daily lives or appear on our screens while we scroll. Dark Angel is played by Sumedh Mudgalkar, Fetish Girl is brilliantly played by Plabita Borthakur, Aamcha Spyder is portrayed by Rithvik Sahor who is effortless, and Aadhya Sharma is exceptional as the dancing queen. Rohit Chandel performs well as a transgender Rajkumar, who is looking forward to his gender change operation. Siddharth plays the moral compass of the show. He works as a content moderator for the company and is unhappy with its functioning. His restraint is probably meant to display an internal struggle that more or less takes a good performance out of him. Javed Jaffrey is refreshing to see as Ravi Gupta, the head of the application. There are other characters too and this is where it gets a little tedious to keep your interest. There are so many to follow, a little patience can be helpful.

Still, the show is a commendable effort. For many, doing shows on the dangers of social media is nothing new. Escape Live asks many questions. I’m a little apprehensive about saying anything far-fetched or unrealistic here. Prospects that seemed odd yesterday have become an example today. It remains to be decided how this vicious world spirals out of control in the future, and if it happens as these dystopian prophecies show, the creators may despair, “told you so”.
