EU parliamentarians’ committee reaches preliminary deal on Artificial Intelligence Act

A committee of European Union lawmakers reached a preliminary agreement on Thursday on a European Artificial Intelligence Act that would pave the way for the first regulation of AI.

“Against conservative yearnings for more surveillance and left-wing fantasies of over-regulation, Parliament found a solid compromise that would regulate oh proportionately, protect citizens’ rights, while also fostering innovation and boosting the economy,” said Svenja Hahn, a deputy in the European Parliament.

The European Commission proposed draft rules nearly two years ago to protect citizens from the dangers of the emerging technology, which has experienced a boom in investment and consumer popularity in recent months.

Before the rules can become law, the draft must go through what is called a triumvirate between EU countries and EU parliamentarians.

Under the proposals, companies that make generative AI tools such as chatgpt must disclose whether they have used copyrighted material in their systems.

Legislators have sought to strike a balance between encouraging innovation while protecting fundamental rights of citizens.

This led to different AI tools being classified according to their perceived risk level: from minimal to limited, high and unacceptable. High-risk instruments will not be banned, but companies will be required to be highly transparent in their operations.

Democratic Senator Mark Warner raised concerns about the potential risks oh technology. “Beyond industry commitments, however, it is also clear that some level of regulation is necessary in this area,” Warner said.
