EU parliament’s top group suggests blacklisting Switzerland after Credit Suisse leak – Times of India

Media outlets published the results of investigations into the leaks of data on thousands of accounts held at the bank over the past decades, saying customers appeared to include human rights abusers and businessmen who are under sanctions.
Credit Suisse said it strongly denied any allegations of wrongdoing and that the media report was based on “partial, inaccurate or selective information taken out of context”.
European People’s Party (EPP), the conservative group that has the most seats in the European Parliament, called on the EU Commission on Monday to “re-evaluate Switzerland as a high-risk money-laundering country”.
“The’swiss secretThe findings point to the huge shortcomings of Swiss banks when it comes to prevention of money laundering,” said EPP’s Coordinator on Economic Affairs. Marcus Ferber said.
“When Swiss banks fail to properly implement international anti-money laundering standards, Switzerland itself becomes a high-risk jurisdiction,” he said.
The EU list currently includes 21 countries that are considered to be deficient in their rules and practices against money laundering. These include Iran, Myanmar, Syria and North Korea. There is no European country on the list.
Swiss officials and the European Commission, which is responsible for drafting and reviewing the list, were not immediately available for comment.
