‘Evil Dead Rise’ movie review: A joy-filled addition to Sam Raimi’s horror classic

A scene from ‘Evil Dead Rise’

it’s a lot of fun evil dead riseThe fifth installment in the series that began with Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult classic the evil Dead, There’s blood (6,500 liters of fake blood according to writer-director Lee Cronin), eye trauma (not so fun), elevators filled with blood, bare-handed scalping, drone decapitations and… let me see, ooh yeah chainsaw and Chopping from a piece of wood.

Evil Dead Rise (English)

director: Lee Cronin

mold: Lily Sullivan, Alyssa Sutherland, Morgan Davis, Gabriel Echols, Nell Fischer

Order: 97 minutes

Story: Sisters who are separated come together to fight an ancient evil

The film begins with three happy campers, Teresa (Mirabai Pease), Caleb (Richard Crutchley) and Jessica (Anna-Marie Thomas), vacationing in a beautiful cabin in the woods. teresa is studious, studies Wuthering Heights While meat puppets Caleb plays with his drone and Jessica is apparently asleep from a mysterious illness.

Lockwood’s terror from the Emily Bronte classic comes in the form of a call from a not so sad voice saying, “Let me in” before the scarier things come calling. We go back a day. Music technician Beth (Lily Sullivan) is moving in with her sister, Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland), a single mother, with her children Danny (Morgan Davis), Bridget (Gabrielle Echols) and Cassie (Nell Fischer).

The apartment they are living in, Monde (an anagram of monster – not cute?) is falling apart and they have to vacate it by the end of the month. The kids go out to get pizza while the sisters face recriminations from both sides. An earthquake occurs, which opens a hole in the basement of the building.

Naturally curious Danny looks into the hole and finds a bunch of religious paraphernalia including a scary looking book and some vinyl records. Knowing that his mother is short of cash and knowing that the book and record may fetch some money, he brings them home.

Once he cracks open the book – the evil-toothed clench should have given him a clue, but never mind – all hell really does break loose. Neighbors pitch in, including shotgun-wielding Mr. Fonda (Mark Mitchinson) and noble Earth Gabriel (Jayden Daniels), but can’t do much in the face of an elevator filled with blood and diabolical records.

evil dead rise Beautifully shot with many engaging shots, including carnage from a peephole perspective and a face caught in a murderous mirror shard. And that final iconic steady cam shot is just so good, so good that you almost scream for joy as the screams of horror echo as the frame fades to black.

The film has a dazzling timelessness that proves that like good, evil is eternal. The final girl theme is elevated and preserved in a clever clever way. From Elliot and Beverly the sisters are all over our screens dead ringers So far Beth and Ellie and it’s an interesting dynamic to explore. go the sociological route or the psychological route, evil dead rise offers a gorgeously gory riposte to the summer blues.
