Expansion of Punjab cabinet will happen tomorrow: Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi

Punjab Chief Minister, Charanjit Singh Channi is likely to induct seven new faces, while five ministers who were part of the Amarinder Singh-led government are expected to be dropped from the cabinet.

With the finalization of the list of ministers for the new cabinet, Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi met Governor Banwarilal Purohit at Raj Bhavan at around 12.30 pm on Saturday.

After meeting the governor, Channi told reporters that the swearing-in ceremony of the new ministers would be held at 4.30 pm on Sunday.

His meeting with the governor came hours after he returned from Delhi after the last round of discussions with the party high command on cabinet formation.

According to sources, Pargat Singh, Raj Kumar Verka, Gurkeerat Singh Kotli, Sangat Singh Gilzian, Amarinder Singh Raja Waring, Kuljit Nagra and Rana Gurjit Singh are likely to be included in the cabinet.

It is also learned that the party has decided to retain Vijay Inder Singla, Manpreet Singh Badal, Brahm Mohindra, Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Arunu Choudhary, Razia Sultana and Bharat Bhushan Ashu from the Amarinder Singh government.

However, five MLAs Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, Balbir Singh Sidhu, Gurpreet Singh Kanger and Sunder Sham Arora, who were ministers in the Amarinder Singh-led cabinet, may be dropped, sources said.

The names of the Channi-led cabinet were agreed during his meeting with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other senior party members in the national capital.

Channi was summoned by the Congress high command to Delhi on Friday to discuss cabinet formation. The visit happened within hours of his return from the national capital.

A total of 18 MLAs, including Chief Minister Channi and his two deputy Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and OP Soni, can be included in the cabinet.
