Experience rural Bengal at Chennai’s first Poush Mela

The Poush Mela is a mirror of the folk art and culture of rural Bengal. It was introduced as a small family affair by Rabindranath Tagore’s family in Santiniketan in 1894 with a handful of Brahmo Samaj followers.

The fair was initially organized in connection with the anniversary of the Brahma temple established by Rabindranath Tagore’s father Debendranath Tagore on 21 December 1891 (the seventh day of Pausha month of 1298 of the Bengali calendar) at Santiniketan. Now, the Bengal Association in Chennai is introducing it in the city.

Paush Mela 2023 will have stalls selling handicrafts like Kantha, Dokra and Patchitra. Visitors can shop for everything from sarees to shankh-pola (shell and coral bangles worn by Bengali brides). And of course, in keeping with the tradition, the event will also showcase a range of Bengali cuisine. Bhaskar Bhakta, secretary of the Bengal Association, says, “The Poush Mela 2023 is an effort to help Bengalis who have grown up in Tamil Nadu get to know their culture. It is considered a sign of the tradition of Bengal. He says that he has invited participants from different districts like Birbhum and Purulia to sell the handicrafts. Then adds, “We have also invited a team of six people from Phulia to form Pithas such as sworn oath, Dudhpuli And Sarpuria., and a team of three people from Nabadwip to make rasgullas and other sweets.”

Poush Mela coordinator Sanjib Mullick says, “To spice things up, there will be Bengali style fuchka with tamarind water and Gondhraj LebuAs well as jhal muri, (At the risk of starting a heated food war — the fuchka water is like puri, while jhal muri Bhel is the cousin of Puri).

Wow! Momos and Nostalgic Kolkata will be on the special menu, and you can end your meal with chai served in earthen pots. Also keep an eye out for the iconic winter treat of Bengal, nolen masterwhich will be for sale.

One of the highlights of any Poush Mela is the live performance of Bengali folk music. Bhaskar says, “We have invited Baul and Bhawai singers from Coochbehar as well as Chhau dancers from Purulia. These artists will perform every day. The association has invited two groups representing Assam to perform the Bihu dance. The cultural group has also invited Pulak Kanti Dhar, a poet of the World Poetry Forum from Bangladesh.

The event will be held from January 26 to January 29 at 10 pm at Bengal Association T Nagar.
