Extremely worried and upset about the matter related to Wrestling Federation of India: PT Usha

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha on Thursday said that she is deeply concerned and disturbed by the allegation of sexual harassment against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, claimed by the country’s top wrestlers of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). He said that the apex sports body of the country makes every possible effort to protect the women participants.

Olympic medalists Bajrang Punia and Gawah Malik besides India’s top wrestlers Vinesh Phogat have been on strike against the WFI president for the past two days. He has been accused by the President of sexual harassment and intimidation. These players have demanded dissolution of the federation.

In Indian Olympic Association statements, PT Usha said, “Being a woman and a former athlete and the sport at present, I am deeply concerned and disturbed by the latest developments in Indian wrestling, in which a section of athletes have attacked senior officials of the sport. There are serious allegations against him.

Usha said that she has full faith in the government. They have appealed to all the National Sports Federations (NSFs) to cooperate in this matter. “Though this matter is a matter of utmost concern, I am motioned by the prompt response of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, which has asked the federation to clarify within the next 72 hours,” he said.

Usha said, “I also have full faith in the Government of India and I am sure that it will take appropriate steps in the right direction in this matter. However, as IOA President, I have full hope that the players will not deviate from their rights under any circumstances.
