Eyes on SP bastion Mainpuri for 2024 elections, is Shivpal Yadav projecting himself as Mulayam Singh’s heir?

Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat, which is said to be a stronghold of the Samajwadi Party and is currently represented by Mulayam Singh Yadav, is already in the limelight ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Mainpuri seat has now become a topic of discussion when Shivpal Yadav announced that if his elder brother Mulayam Singh Yadav does not contest from this seat, he will contest from here in the 2024 general election. The hustle and bustle in the political circles shows that this announcement by Shivpal Yadav has been made not only keeping in mind the favorable circumstances, but also keeping in mind the political stature of this seat.

But this raises the question why Shivpal, who has already contested the Lok Sabha elections from Firozabad in 2019, is eyeing the Mainpuri parliamentary seat for the 2024 elections?

Many believe that Mainpuri seat has been a stronghold of the Yadav family and if Shivpal wins, it will send a strong message not only in the state but across the country. People with knowledge of developments believe that Shivpal is eyeing Mainpuri seat to enter national politics, while at the same time he would like to install his son Aditya Yadav in state politics. Recently, Aditya Yadav was made the state president of Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party Lohia (PSPL), a political organization founded by Shivpal.

On the other hand, Shivpal may also be eyeing the Mainpur Lok Sabha seat to send a message to the traditional Samajwadi Party voters that after Mulayam Singh Yadav, he is the real heir to the political legacy of the SP veteran. Shivpal’s announcement also comes in the backdrop of health issues of his brother Mulayam Singh Yadav. Mulayam Singh Yadav is not keeping well recently and it is not certain whether he will contest the 2024 elections or not.

SP sources say that in the event of Mulayam Singh Yadav not contesting in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the party has started considering a possible candidate from Mainpuri. Sources said the party is considering the candidature of Akhilesh Yadav if Mulayam is unable to contest the elections due to health reasons. Akhilesh’s cousin Dharmendra Yadav and Tej Pratap Yadav alias Teju are also in the fray.

The Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat has been with the Samajwadi Party for a long time and has been retained several times by the members of the Yadav family. The seat was won by Uday Pratap of Janata Dal in 1989 and 1991, while Mulayam Singh Yadav from Mainpuri won for the first time in 1996. Since then this seat has gone to the Samajwadi Party for nine consecutive times.

Whenever Mulayam Singh Yadav has not contested from this seat, some member of the Yadav family has contested and won.

Interestingly, Shivpal Yadav is an MLA from Jaswant Nagar assembly seat, which is a part of Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat. Akhilesh Yadav He is an MLA from Karhal which is also a part of Mainpuri parliamentary seat. Like Mainpuri, Kishni assembly seat is occupied by SP’s Barjesh Katheria, while two assembly seats- Bhogaon and Mainpuri Sadar are occupied by BJP’s Ram Naresh Agnihotri and Jaiveer Singh.

The Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat has around 17.3 lakh voters, of which about 40 per cent belong to the Yadav community, while 29 per cent are Rajput, Chauhan, Bhadauria and other upper castes. The remaining 30 percent of the population are Muslims and Dalits.

In 2004, Mulayam Singh Yadav got 5,95,918 votes, while in 2019 he got 5,24,926 votes. BJP candidate Prem Singh Shakya had secured around 4,30,537 votes in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
