Ferrari could turn the engine on and offer a new destination

While Ferrari is concerned about the update being prepared for the inaugural Miami GP, it has a few things in the works that could tip the balance in favor of the Italian team, which recently had a bloody nose in its home weekend. Ferrari’s F1-75 is the only car on the grid largely running in the configuration that was unveiled for the first pre-season test in Barcelona. Ferrari has focused on understanding the car before rolling out the update in light of the F1 budget cap.

Red Bull introduced new sidepods at the end of pre-season testing, which reduced its porpoising and gave its car comparable performance. But it also turns out that Red Bull has a powerful low drag wing that enables it to disastrous top speeds, despite Ferrari’s more maneuverable and more powerful engine. This low drag wing allowed Verstappen to overtake Leclerc in the final moments of the race in Saudi Arabia and also in the sprint race at Imola. Red Bull also brought an update to the Imola that allowed it to drive a lighter car which gave it a performance advantage.

However, Ferrari is bidding its time. It has not revealed the true potential of the new hybrid engine. In Australia, it unlocked an additional 5bhp but was said to be waiting for Miami to get more power. Ferrari was running a reliability verification test on the engine and is said to have finished the process. In fact, Carlos Sainz Jr., it introduced a new power unit at Imola, which he used to great effect to jump from P10 to P4 in the Imola sprint race.

The Leclerc is said to have got this new engine spec which gets more power in the Miami which is a long straight. In addition, Ferrari is also getting a new low drag wing that can compete with what Red Bull has in place to maximize overtaking capability in the DRS zone.

Ferrari is also testing a new floor that will also help reduce its weight, even if it is already lighter than Red Bull. This new floor has now been tested twice over the past two race weekends, but given Ferrari’s massive porpoising – it could start in Miami so the F1-75 maintains its lead.

0 notes

The big undercurrent is that Ferrari has not revealed the true potential of its new power unit which not only helped it overtake Mercedes and Red Bull but also greatly benefited Alfa Romeo and Haas.
