Kevin Magnussen has signed a multi-year deal to make a sensational return to Formula 1 with the Haas team in 2022, following the team’s decision to part ways with Nikita Mazepin.

Kevin Magnussen has signed a multi-year deal with Haas after the Formula One team split with Russian Nikita Mazepin.

The 29-year-old racer from Denmark was with Haas from 2017 until he left the sport at the end of the 2020 season. He was previously with McLaren (2014-15) and Renault (2016).

Magnussen went on to race in IndyCar and was set to join Peugeot’s World Endurance Championship team in 2022. He will now partner with Mick Schumacher following Haas’ decision to terminate Niki Mazepin’s contract with immediate effect.

Haas said Magnussen, 29, had signed a “multi-year contract deal” and the Dane will take part in official pre-season Tests in Bahrain from Thursday to Saturday.

“I am delighted to welcome Kevin Magnussen back to the Haas F1 team,” said Haas team boss Guenther Steiner.

“When looking for a driver who can bring value to the team, not to mention the wealth of Formula 1 experience, Kevin was a direct decision for us.”

Mazepin and Haas’ Russian title sponsor Uralkali terminated their contracts last Saturday as a result of Ukraine’s invasion.

Mazepin’s father Dmitry is a non-executive director of Uralkali, a group specializing in potash.

Magnussen, a veteran of 119 career Formula One, starts with a podium finish on his debut in 2014 – having previously ran for Haas between 2017-2020 after stints with McLaren and Renault.

He finished a career-high ninth in the 2018 World Championships with Haas.
