Verstappen has now opened his account at the 2022 World Drivers’ Championship

We always knew there would be a Titanic duel between Verstappen and Leclerc in 2022, and the second race of the season lived up to the hype. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who had qualified in P2, managed to overtake Red Bull’s Sergio Pérez after the safety car came out during the first round of the pit stop in Jeddah and was largely trailed by Verstappen in the race. Went. Both Red Bull and Ferrari were similarly matched with the Ferrari being more dominant in the slower sections of the track, while Red Bull had a 10 kmph speed advantage over the Ferrari in the world’s fastest street circuit. The advantage proved decisive for Red Bull and Verstappen as the defending world champions closed on Leclerc after a virtual safety car during the 45th lap of the race. There was then a duel between the two until the end of the race when Verstappen decisively managed to overtake the Monegasque driver on the 47th lap and narrowly held on to win.

The two have been rivals since their karting days

Earlier in the race, Verstappen overtook Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Jr to take P3, while the Spaniard dropped to P4. However, when Pérez parked a safety car, a free pit stop was given to Leclerc, Sainz and Verstappen and the Mexican fell down to P4. Ferrari topped another solid race where it managed to achieve P2 and P3. Behind the pairing of Ferrari and Red Bull was George Russell in the P5 for Mercedes, five places ahead of his 7-time world champion teammate Lewis Hamilton. Esteban Ocon was alone in Alpine who finished in P6 just ahead of Lando Norris in the lone McLaren in P6.

Pierre Gasly managed P9 for AlphaTauri ahead of Kevin Magnussen at Haas in P8. Gasly’s teammate Tsunoda did not start the race due to a drive train problem and Haas called on Mick Schumacher not to race after his horrific crash in Q2 yesterday to save parts for the next race in Australia. Guanyue Zhou was the lone Alfa Romeo to finish in P11, ahead of the Aston Martin pair of Hulkenberg and Stroll.

Ferrari extends Constructors’ Championship lead

It was certainly a race by accident where the two cars had not originally started the race and even Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari panicked before the race started with some electronics issues. Alonso, Ricciardo, Bottas, Albon and Latifi all retired from the race and only 13 cars finished instead of the usual 20.

Ferrari has extended its lead to the 2022 World Championship, while Leclerc and Sainz remain P1 and P2 in the Drivers’ Championship, but are now followed by Verstappen and Red Bull.
