Red Bull ace manages pole in case of rain

Defending world champion Max Verstappen managed his first pole position of the season for Red Bull. He overtook Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who leads the world championship, thanks to a rush of red flags caused by crashes and changeable conditions. McLaren’s Lando Norris managed a P3 ahead of a sensational P4 by Kevin Magnussen at Haas. Fernando Alonso managed P5 for Alpine ahead of Daniele Ricciardo in the other McLaren.

In the second Red Bull, Sergio Pérez advanced to P7 from Bottas and Vettel for Alfa Romeo and Aston Martin respectively. Carlos Sainz Jr. blew his chances of pole position for the first time after crashing at the fag end of the second quarter, where he was P2 and the rain had started again. The damage to his car meant he would start sprint qualifying from P10.

The Spaniard put his car in the middle at the end of Q2, which meant he was in Q3 . could not participate in

The assured red flag due to a Sainz accident after rain meant that Mick Schumacher at Haas could not get into Q3 for the first time after looking decently early. His teammate Kevin Magnussen managed P7 in the second quarter.

The big blow of the season was the Mercedes pairing who barely made it to Q2 and then failed to qualify for Q1. Hamilton managed P13 and Russell got P11 split by Schumacher. Guanyue Zhou at Alfa Romeo managed P14 with Lance Stroll in the top 15 for Aston Martin.

It was a big disappointment for the AlphaTauri team at their home track as Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda managed P17 and P16 respectively. Nicolas Latif managed P17 for Williams, while his teammate Alex Albon was ruled out in the opening bit of Q1 after his brakes caught fire.

Esteban Ocon was the last car on the grid in the P20 as he did not even finish Q1. This season’s classification will be the same as for Saturday’s sprint race.
