After a short break in the calendar the FIA Formula 2 Championship returned to Imola for Round 3 at the venue of the Emilia Romagna GP. Although the weekend was not as spectacular by F2 standards, there was a fair amount of entertainment in both Formula 2 races of the weekend. Here’s how the incident unfolded:

sprint race

The smaller of the 2 races, the F2 sprint race followed the F1 sprint on Saturday afternoon. The sprint race is a reverse grid race – where the top 10 drivers from qualifying start in reverse order – Logan Sargent of Carlin, who qualified 10th, stood on pole position, followed by Marcus Armstrong and Jehan Daruwalla, Those who had qualified 9th and 8th on Friday. Daruwalla made a quick start and made his way to P2 overtaking polesitter Sargent, who had a poor start and fell to P5 by the end of lap 1. Armstrong also started well and did enough to stop Daruwalla from going. In turn 1.

Armstrong then controlled the entire race from the lead. An early safety car rolled down the field after lap 1 as Beckman and the car parked in the middle, collecting Nowak in the process, but Armstrong overtook everyone else and led a great restart. Led the race till the finish without any challenge. Daruvala caught up with the Kiwis in the later stages of the race, but his PREMA Racing teammate Dennis Hauger also followed closely.

Feature Race

The F2 Feature race was full of drama, but still lacking in excitement. There were small entertainment opportunities during the race, but overall it turned out to be a bland event. The beginning was chaotic. The pollster jury Vips got a good escape, but Roy Nissani and Ralph Boschung were the ones who converted the top 2 places to 1 after mega starts from P6 and P4.

Last year’s F3 title rivals Jack Doohan and Dennis Hauger initially made contact with each other and were both forced to retire to trigger a safety car. After the restart, Polsitter Vipes ran out of the wide corner, turning around and out of the race, triggering another safety car. This prompted all the ‘super soft’ tire runners to make their pitstops, with the ‘medium’ tire runners outside. Jahan Daruwalla got the lead as he started the race on medium, but nearly 20 laps later dropped down the order to finish P9 after his pitstop. He is now in third place in the FIA F2 Championship, 16 points behind the leader.

After his pitstop from the lead, Roy Nissani looked good for the win, but he had a similar incident with Vips, which sent him into the wall. As with many safety car periods, it was unclear who would ultimately win with different strategies, but even though the lead changed hands several times, this was not due to close racing. Post everyone’s pitstop, Felipe Dragovich leads the race in the closing stages of the race, having not yet made his mandatory pitstop. The best chance for him would be a late safety car that he could have used to make his pitstop and not fall low down the order, and the Brazilian managed to do so under a safety car period in the closing stages of the race.
