FA Cup: Middlesbrough Stun Spurs, Manchester City Ease into Quarter

Middlesbrough dealt another FA Cup blow to extend Tottenham’s long wait for silverware with a 1-0 win after extra time at Riverside on Tuesday, while Manchester City finished the final with a 2-0 win at Peterborough. Relaxed at eight.

Borough defeated Manchester United at Old Trafford in the fourth round and were the worthy winners to condemn Championship side Spurs to another trophyless season.

Tottenham have not won a trophy since winning the League Cup in 2008 and another extremely disappointing defeat raises further questions over manager Antonio Conte’s future.

The Italian only took charge in November, but has already indicated he could pull out after four losses in the last six Premier League games.

“We will have to give our best for the rest of the season, then we will see what our position is and our assessment of the season. It is too early to say anything about that,” Conte said.

Teenager Josh Coburn came off the bench in the 107th minute to score the only goal with a thumping finish on Hugo Lloris.

“Between the win at Manchester United and here we turn at Barnsley. Football is a ridiculous game,” said Borough manager Chris Wilder.

“The supporters gave us the energy to perform at the top.”

For Tottenham, Harry Kane flagged off the ball in the net in the second half.

But the England captain may also rethink his future as he awaits to win the first major honour of his career.

Middlesbrough was the brightest side ever in extra time and got their reward when Coburn passed Lloris with a through ball from Crooks.

– Leads Zinchenko City –

Earlier, Alexander Zinchenko captained City as a classy finish from Riyad Mahrez and Jack Grealish sent off the English champions.

Ukraine international Zinchenko carried an armband in his first appearance since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Fernandinho was initially listed as City captain for the tie, but the Brazilian, who signed from Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk, offered the role to Zinchenko in a show of solidarity.

“It’s not an easy phase for Oleks, his family, his country, but it’s best for him to play football at the moment,” City boss Pep Guardiola said.

Zinchenko and Peterborough captain Frankie Kent together held a Ukrainian flag as they led the teams at the start of the match.

Once the action started, Guardiola’s men took the time to find a breakthrough against a side sitting at the bottom of the championship.

Mahrez scored an impressive 19 goals in just 32 appearances for the season, as the Algerian cleverly directed the ball into the far corner from a narrow angle at the hour mark.

Grealish has had a short productive season since his £100 million ($134 million) move from Aston Villa.

But he marked his return from injury with a brilliant touch to control a long ball from Phil Foden, leaving Steven Benda behind for his fourth City goal.

“When we were on the coach on the way to the game, I was sitting next to Phil and we were scrolling through videos of (Lionel) Messi,” Grealish said.

“After scoring he came up to me and said it was just what we were looking for.”

Crystal Palace also cemented their place in the quarter-finals with a 2-1 win over Stoke.

Chekhou Kouyte and Jairo Riedewald hit for the Eagles on either side of Josh Tyman’s draw.
