Facial recognition technology to help passengers authenticate themselves at airports

When the first phase of the much-awaited Digi Yatra system begins on August 31, passengers departing from seven airports will be able to authenticate themselves using facial recognition cameras, a report said. The August 31 rollout will cover Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Varanasi, Vijayawada, Kolkata and Pune airports.

Passengers will not be required to provide their boarding permit or identity card upon arrival at the airport, drop off their bag or leave for boarding as the Digi Yatra service will allow them to link their travel and identity documents together and perform a facial scan . in advance.

Instead, individuals must present themselves in front of a facial recognition camera. Officials say the initiative will significantly reduce lines and waiting times at security checkpoints and boarding gates.

However, Aadhaar details will be required initially for registration on the system by air travelers. According to a report in Hindustan TimesAn official said that the airport authority India (AAI) is a stakeholder in the non-profit Digi Yatra Foundation, which is launching a Digi Yatra central ecosystem that will integrate with various systems involved, including government ID repositories, airport security systems and airline backend networks.

According to an AAI representative, the system is being developed as per the W3C specifications for Decentralized Identity (DID) and makes it possible to exchange multiple verified credentials required for transit through different airport checkpoints.

Meanwhile, a Bengaluru airport official said that a mobile application that will work with both Android and Apple iPhones is ready to launch for the purpose and the backend of the ecosystem, which includes issuers and validators, will also be used. Tested and designed.

The official further added, “With the Digi Yatra Central platform, we are confident that the adoption of this new technology will accelerate across all airports in India.”

Key Specs of Digi Travel System

  • Passengers will have to download the mobile app for Digi Yatra
  • The next step would be to enroll by digitally validating a government-issued ID card such as Aadhaar or driving license; can use digi locker service
  • People will be asked to take a selfie to record their facial features to generate Digi Yatra ID
  • Once all these steps are completed, people can link their flight reservations on the app

On the day of travel, the Digi Yatra app will send the passenger’s face to the airport, which will act as an ID proof, and the ticket information, both of which will be properly encrypted, said a spokesperson for GMR, which will provide airports in Hyderabad. Handles and Delhi.

The person also informed that the pre-security areas and boarding areas of airports will be equipped with biometric camera-based e-gates.

facial recognition technology

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) of the Ministry of Home Affairs and various police forces were the first to start using facial recognition technology. Now, along with airports, this technology is being used in railways and public sector institutions.

The objective behind using this technology is better identification of people (helping in the detection of criminals), passenger check-in and biometric attendance in companies.

It should be noted that both local and international businesses operate as facial recognition software vendors. As reported earlier, NEC, a Japanese electronics corporation, has been enlisted to implement this technology in four Indian airports which are Kolkata, Varanasi, Pune and Vijayawada.

Similarly, Western Railway ordered over 400 video cameras with real-time facial recognition technology developed by Russian video analytics company Entechlab, which has been certified by Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO).
