‘Fake propaganda by BJP, Congress’: CPI(M) says those accused of Kerala ‘human sacrifice’ are not its active members

The ruling CPI(M) on Thursday denied reports that two of the three accused in the ‘human sacrifice’ case were its active members, terming them as baseless. CPI(M) district secretary KP Udaybhanu said the couple, accused in the double murder case, are not members of the party nor do they hold any post in the party or its affiliated organisations.

“The reports that the double murder accused are active members of the CPI(M) are baseless. He is not a member of the party nor does he have any responsibility in the party or any organization associated with it, as claimed by the media houses,” Udaybhanu said in a statement.

After details of the gruesome murders surfaced on October 11, three men – massage therapist Bhagwal Singh (68) and his wife Laila (59) – were arrested along with prime accused Mohammed Shafi (52).

Hours after news of the double murder in Elantur near here surfaced, the Congress and the BJP attacked the ruling CPI(M). Without directly mentioning media reports that Singh was a local CPI(M) activist, Leader of Opposition in the state assembly VD Satheesan had said it was significant that one of the killers was an activist of a political party, which claimed does progressive.

State BJP chief K Surendran had alleged that one of the killers was a CPI(M) worker and there was interference by radical religious groups in the crime.

The CPI(M) said that this is a false propaganda spread by the BJP and the Congress to malign the image of the CPI(M) which is at the forefront of the fight against irrational beliefs and superstitions. Udaybhanu said it was the CPI(M) which had earlier demanded strict action against the culprits in the case.

Two women were allegedly sacrificed as part of black magic in Elanthur village in Pathanamthitta district. Police had said that the helpless women, who earn their livelihood by selling lottery tickets on the streets, were allegedly murdered to solve the financial issues of the accused couple and bring prosperity in their lives.
