Bollywood Movies Life will not happen again The main characters enjoy themselves to the fullest at the La Tomatina festival in Spain, where participants throw tomatoes and engage in tomato fights for entertainment purposes. But another tomato-related event is organized in the country where farmers compete among themselves to pick out the worst looking tomatoes.

A video shared by Now This on Tuesday shows farmers in Spain’s Navarre region taking part in a competition for the worst tomato ever. The tomatoes featured prominently in this competition are the Marmande variety, also known as Tudela’s ugly tomato. The contest was held on 12 September this year when farmers came together with their ugliest looking tomatoes to win the top prize, which happens to be an Iberian ham.

Speaking to Reuters, farmer and participant Santos Martínez said that the reason tomatoes turn ugly are some of the bees that sprout them. Bees usually carry pollen from place to place, however, when this process doesn’t go smoothly, tomatoes grow into ugly shapes.

Marisol and Vincent Martinez, the winners of this year’s competition, told Reuters they didn’t intentionally grow ugly tomatoes and that it was grown just that way. Coincidentally, an ugly batch of tomatoes turned out to be the reason the couple took part in the competition.

In addition to the Ugly Tomato Contest, the Spanish city of Haro also hosts a Wine Fight festival, known locally as La Batala del Vino de Haro. The annual event takes place between June 27 and June 30 where thousands of locals and tourists climb a mountain in Spain’s La Rioja region, throwing sweet red wine over each other. This day also coincides with St Peter’s Feast Day. The event is very similar to the La Tomatina festival, where participants squeeze tomatoes and drench in tomato juice. Enthusiastic tourists and locals alike join in this fun activity in Spain.
