Farmers organization will meet today on the assurance of the Center to the farmers

The United Kisan Morcha will hold a meeting here on Monday to review the progress made so far by the Center on promises made to farmers, including forming a panel on MSP and decide the future course of action.

The SKM had led a year-long agitation against the Centre’s three agricultural laws. It did so last year after the government agreed to repeal controversial laws and consider six other demands including withdrawal of cases registered against farmers during the agitation, legal guarantee on minimum support price (MSP) and compensation for farmers. The agitation was suspended on 9 December. Families of farmers killed during the demonstration.

According to a SKM office-bearer, leaders of all the constituent farmers’ unions of SKM will participate in the meeting.

A SKM leader said the agenda of the meeting is to review the letter of assurance given by the government to the SKM on December 9, 2021, the National Action Plan on the issue of MSP and the progress made in the Lakhimpur Kheri case. Sunday.

He said that the plan to build a memorial for the farmers who were martyred during the agitation against the agricultural laws would also be discussed in the meeting.

“A roadmap will be decided to put pressure on the central government to ensure minimum support price and legal guarantee on meeting other demands,” he said.

Internal issues of SKM like rules and regulations, current status of funds and decision on farmers’ unions contesting Punjab Assembly elections will also be discussed during the meeting.

The SKM had observed January 31 as “Betrayal Day” to protest against the Center for not fulfilling any promises, on the grounds of which the farmers’ movement was suspended.

It had said that it would have “no option but to resume the movement” if the promises made were not fulfilled at the earliest.
