China started its campaign in FIFA U-17 Women’s World The Cup defeated Mexico 2-1 in their Group C first round match here on Wednesday.

In another match in Group C, Spain beat Colombia 1–0. Canada beat France 1-1 in Goa, while Japan beat Tanzania 4-0 in Group D matches at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

The Mexican team was awarded a penalty in the 35th minute when Chinese defender Huang Jiaxin made a handball inside the box, but Maribel Flores’ shot was denied by the crossbar.

China broke the deadlock in the opening minutes of the second half. Huang knocked into the box, allowing China captain Qiao Ruiqi to step up and convert the latter’s penalty.

In a counter-attack, substitute Yu Jingyu doubled the young “Steel Roses” lead in the 90th minute after skipping through the defense and driving the ball home, Xinhua news agency reported.

Two minutes into stoppage time, Katherine Guizarro pulled back once for Mexico. The Mexican girls almost leveled the match in the last minute, but Valerie Vargas’s fatal volley was saved by Chinese goalkeeper Liu Chen.

In the Group D clash, Canada advanced in the 57th minute after Annabelle Chuqua scored in the 67th minute after both teams fought equally in the first half.

But this lead did not last long and France leveled the score in the 73rd minute when Lucy Calba scored.
