FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: Sadio Mane scores as Senegal wins, Algeria hosted by Burkina Faso

Liverpool star Sadio Mane was among the targets for Senegal, taking important steps towards qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar along with Nigeria and Tunisia. All three nations are seeded first in the mini-league and have a maximum of six points after two rounds, which began with a home win over the lowest-ranked sides before being seeded second. One of the 10 four-team groups is led by lowly Tanzania, who beat Madagascar on penalties after just five seconds.

African Footballer of the Year Mane conceded a yellow card defeat at Congo Brazzaville to convert an 87th-minute penalty to win 3-1.

Boule Dia gave Senegal the lead in the first half which was canceled by a silver gunawola penalty, before Watford forward Ismaila Sarr pushed the visitors again and Mane put the result beyond doubt.

For their second consecutive World Cup appearance, Senegal has six points in Group H, Namibia four, Congo one and Togo pointless.

Ahmed Musa made his 100th appearance for Nigeria, overcoming a seven-player deficit hurdle to beat Cape Verde 2-1 in Mindelo due to British coronavirus travel restrictions.

Among those absent was Leicester City star Kelechi Iheanacho, whose two goals gave the Super Eagles a winning start in Group C against Liberia four days earlier.

Victor Osimhen equalized for Nigeria on 29 minutes when Dylan Tavares put the hosts ahead and the Group C clash was settled by Kenny Rocha with his own goal of 14 minutes.

Nigeria, a six-time qualifier for the World Cup, has six points, Liberia three, and Cape Verde and Central African Republic have one point each.

Goals scored early and late sealed Tunisia’s 2–0 win over Zambia in Ndola, giving the North Africans an early three-point advantage in Group B.

Algeria held

Former Premier League forward Wahbi Khajri converted the ninth penalty and substitute Anis Ben Slimane lofted a loose ball over the net from close to two minutes into stoppage time.

Tunisia have six points, and Equatorial Guinea shared second place with Zambia after an Ivan Salvador penalty led to a 1–0 win over Mauritania in Malabo.

Libya also have the maximum points, winning 1–0 in Angola via an Omar Al Khoja goal to take a two-point lead over Egypt in Group F.

Algeria scored an unbeaten 29 matches after a 1–1 draw with Burkina Faso, who equalized through Abdul Tapsoba 64 minutes after Sofiane Feghouli put forward African champions.

Each side has four points in Group A, with Algeria occupying first place on goal difference in a segment completed by Niger and Djibouti.

The match was held in the Moroccan city of Marrakech as none of the stadiums in Burkina Faso meet international standards.

Tanzanian captain Erasto Nyoni scored what is considered one of the fastest penalties since the outsiders moved to the top of the standings of Group J, ahead of Benin on goals scored.

There is no official record for the fastest penalty awarded in international football.

Tanzania, after surrendering a two-goal lead from half-time, took a 3–2 victory in Dar es Salaam, thanks to a slippered goal seven minutes into the second half.

Tanzania and Benin have four points each, Democratic Republic of Congo two and shock 2019 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finalists Madagascar are in vain.

After six match days the 10 group winners are completed in November progressing to a two-leg play-off in the following March, which will decide the five nations to represent Africa at the 2022 World Cup.
