FIH announces Pro League events for the upcoming season; Rourkela added as second Indian host city

A new stadium has been built in Rourkela to host some matches of the FIH Men’s World Cup to be held from January 13 to 29.

The Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, which will host most of the World Cup matches, is the other Indian venue that will also stage FIH Pro League games.

Other venues that will host FIH Pro League matches from October 28, 2022 to July 5, 2023 are Newcastle and Hobart in Australia, Mendoza and Santiago del Estero in Argentina, Antwerp (Belgium) in the Netherlands, London, Eindhoven and Amsterdam. , and Christchurch and Wellington in New Zealand.

“As already announced in March, a new program – based on a series of ‘mini-tournaments’ where multiple teams will gather at one venue to play two matches against each other – will be available in this new Pro League season. will apply to the FIH,” the FIH said in a statement.

“This format will have a huge positive impact on players’ well-being and the environment, thanks to a substantial reduction in the amount of travel required for each team and officials.

“Another major advantage of this revised format is that it increases the number of dates available for athletes to participate in domestic league and club competitions,” the statement added.

The FIH also said it would implement promotion and relegation arrangements from the upcoming season of the Pro League.

While the last-placed team will be relegated as usual, the newly added 2022 FIH Nations Cup winning team will be promoted to the Pro League season in 2023.

“The integration of the promotion-relegation principle will add substantially to the excitement around the Pro League. At the same time, the new format is beneficial to all, especially athletes, national associations, clubs and fans,” said FIH CEO Thierry Weil he said.
