FIH World Cup 2023: Belgium play out 2-2 draw against Germany

Belgium and Germany have four points from two matches and the group topper will be decided in their last matches on January 20.

Defending champions Belgium equalized with six minutes left in the match to play out a thrilling 2-2 draw against Germany and keep themselves in the hunt for direct quarter-final qualification at the FIH Men’s. World Cup here on Tuesday.

Cedric Charlier gave Belgium the lead in the ninth minute through a field goal but Germany came back strongly and scored twice through Wellen Nicklas (22nd minute) and Tom Grambusch (52nd penalty stroke).

In the Pool B match, Victor Vagnez saved Belgium from defeat with a field goal in the 54th minute.

Belgium and Germany have four points from two matches and the group toppers will be decided in their respective last matches on January 20 at the Birsa Munda Stadium in Rourkela.

Belgium face Japan while Germany face South Korea. Belgium currently top the pool on the basis of a better goal difference of plus five compared to Germany’s plus three.

South Korea came back from a one-goal deficit to beat Japan 2-1 in their first Pool A match.

Lee Jung-joon scored two field goals (8th and 23rd minutes) after Ken Nagayoshi gave South Korea the lead through a penalty corner in the first minute.

South Korea is third with three points. They had to face a 0-5 defeat to Belgium in their first match. Japan also lost their first match against Germany 0–3.
