Filmmakers resort to VFX to woo audiences in cinema halls

New Delhi Filmmakers are increasing investment in visual effects as they try to bring audiences back to theaters with larger-than-life glasses. Upcoming movies like Karan Johar’s Brahmastra, which cost 300 crores to make, and with a budget of T-Series’ Adipurush 400 crores, are among the many titles known to spend 50-75 crores on special effects.

Film experts say the need for huge investment in visual effects arises because Indian audiences want more from his films as they are now exposed to the big glasses produced by Hollywood and have discovered world class content on OTT.

“Since the start of the pandemic, viewers are consuming more content than ever before, which is a positive development for our region. To meet moviegoers’ growing demand for visually engaging content with high production values, studios are increasingly incorporating more visual effects and animation into their projects,” said Merzin Tavaria, President, Global Production and Operations, DNEG, a British-Indian visual effects and animation studio that is also co-producing Brahmastra.

“Film makers in India are recognizing the importance of visual effects in the success of their films, resulting in huge budget allocation for VFX. Hence, nowadays, VFX almost starts syncing with script writing and the whole story. an integral part of the telling process.”

Taveria said writers and directors are more open to adopting VFX as a way to achieve storytelling ambitions, especially at a time when traveling to places is difficult or not possible. However, he sees an increase in the adoption of virtual production techniques and technologies, even when restrictions are eased around the world.

Taveria said that currently visual effects make up 10-15% of the budget of an Indian film, but this will increase to 30-35% in the coming years. Additionally, filmmakers have increased the number of VFX shots used in their films from a few hundred to between 1,500 and 2,000 for big-budget films.
