Inflation in India has been increasing continuously for the last several months and this can be attributed to various reasons such as increase in the prices of food and oil etc.

However, most importantly, the sharp depreciation of the rupee against the dollar is one of the most important reasons behind it.

India’s retail inflation rose from 6.71 per cent in July to 7 per cent in August and was on account of a rise in food prices. In fact, retail inflation has been beyond the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) tolerance limit of 6 per cent for eight consecutive months.

The rise in food prices has led to an increase in retail inflation and this is evident from the fact that inflation in the food basket was 7.62 per cent in August, from 6.69 per cent in July and more than doubled from 3.11 per cent in August 2021. ,
