Earlier on February 14, the Finance Minister had met the board of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in New Delhi and in his address outlined the thinking behind the budget and the priorities of the government.
This year’s budget, presented on February 1, has projected nominal gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 11.1 per cent. The government expects this growth to be fueled by the massive capital expenditure program outlined in the budget with a view to boosting economic activity and crowdfunding private investment by creating demand.
Ms Sitharaman has raised capex by 35.4 per cent to Rs 7.5 lakh crore for 2022-23 to continue the public investment-led recovery of the pandemic-battered economy. The capital expenditure this year is estimated to be Rs 5.5 lakh crore.
