Five people died due to air pollution in Kolkata, Mamata Banerjee gave a meeting

Five children died in West Bengal’s Kolkata city in the last 24 hours due to various water pollution, raising fears of a rise in adenovirus cases in the state. Health department officials gave this information on Tuesday. However, doctors are stuck on whether the infection was the cause or not. Mamata Banerjee held a jam meeting on the situation following which the government issued several guidelines and announced an emergency helpline – 1800-313444-222.

Adenoviruses in children usually cause respiratory and intestinal infections. The task said that children in the age group of 0-2 years are at highest risk of infection and children in the age group of 2-5 years are at the highest risk of infection. Children of 5-10 years of age are most likely to fall prey to it (infection).

He said that children above 10 years of age are less prone to stuttering from this virus. He said that most of the precautions need to be taken as the cases are treatable at home only. Of the five children, two were undergoing treatment at the Kolkata Medical College and Hospital, while three others were being treated at the Dr B C Roy Post Graduate Institution of Pediatric Surgery, he said.

“All the five children died due to pneumonia. We are still waiting for the test report of the nine-month-old girl to confirm whether she died due to adenovirus or not.

On Tuesday, a health official said that two people died at government functions in Kolkata due to respiratory infection. A nine-month-old baby died at the Kolkata Medical College and Hospital in Chandranagar in neighboring Hooghly district, while another baby died at the Dr B C Roy Postgraduate Institute of Pediatric Nirman, they said. Officials said that the information about both the deaths was received on Monday. He said these cases were related to other hypersensitivity.
