Flood warning issued in Odisha, IMD predicts extremely heavy rains

A flood warning has been issued in Odisha on Monday due to heavy rains due to deep pressure. Waterlogging was reported from several areas of Bhubaneswar as the state capital recorded 195 mm of rain in 24 hours till 8.30 am, the highest in 63 years. Officials told PTI that on September 9, 1958, the city had received 163 mm of rain.

The pressure over the Bay of West Bengal intensified into a deep depression and crossed the coast near Chandbali in Bhadrak district on Monday morning, following which the Met Office issued an alert for 13 districts.

The Meteorological Department said that the system is very likely to move west-northwestwards over North Odisha, North Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh during the next 48 hours.

The Met Office has issued a ‘Red’ warning predicting heavy to very heavy and extremely heavy rain for Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Sonepur and Bargarh.

In the last 24 hours, Puri received 341 mm of rain, followed by Paradip (219 mm), Gopalpur (64 mm), Chandbali (46 mm), Balasore (24 mm), the Met Office said.

The Central Water Commission (CWC) has issued an alert for several districts as major rivers and their tributaries continue to be in spate due to incessant rains.

“The water level of Brahmani river and its tributaries is expected to rise in districts like Angul, Deogarh, Sundergarh, Kendrapara, Dhenkanal and Jajpur. The water level of Baitarani river is expected to rise in Keonjhar and Bhadrak districts,” the CWC said.

The water level of Mahanadi and its tributaries is likely to rise in Cuttack, Khordha, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Jharsuguda and Bolangir.

The CWC alert said that the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted extremely heavy rains, hence there is a possibility of flood situation in Odisha.

Presently, Jalka river of Subarnarekha basin is flowing above the danger mark in Balasore district.

The office of the Special Relief Commissioner in Bhubaneswar has received reports of the death of two people after a wall collapsed following heavy rains in Kendrapara district. “However, the reports are yet to be officially confirmed,” an official said.

The Meteorological Office has asked all ports to put up Local Warning Sign-III as the sea condition continues to be rough due to deep depression.
