Foldable smartphone market grows by 264 percent, expected to reach 27 million units by 2025

A new report says that shipments of foldable phones are expected to reach 27.6 million units in 2025, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 69.9 percent. International Data Corporation (IDC) estimates that foldable phones will reach a market value of $29 billion in 2025. Worldwide shipments of foldable phones, including both Flip and Fold form factors, reached a total of 7.1 million units in 2021 – an increase of 264.3 percent compared to 1.9 million units shipped in 2020.

“Thanks to their foldable devices, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold make up for Samsung’s lack of Galaxy Note while attracting new consumers to the brand,” said Scarsella. The Flip 3’s new design was a winner thanks to consumers. It has a compact folding size (pocketable), large second display and most importantly, it has a price of $999.

The new Fold 3 has also seen extensive improvements, but costs a lot and is a niche product overall. Despite their small market share, foldables represent a major opportunity for vendors. Foldables have also been seen as a replacement for both phones and tablets in the commercial segment.

“We’ve seen other vendors launch new foldables this year, and we expect more players to try to take a stake from Samsung as the form factor grows in popularity,” IDC said.
