Food Secretary Sudhanshu Pandey said on Thursday that retail tomato prices should stabilize in the next two weeks in southern states, where prices have risen sharply due to crop damage due to local rains.

According to the data maintained by the consumer affairs ministry, retail tomato prices are running between Rs 50 and Rs 106 per kg at many places. The situation is the same in Maharashtra as well.

Barring Delhi, where tomatoes are being sold at Rs 40 per kg, retail prices in other metro cities were at higher levels on June 2. Tomato was sold at Rs 77 per kg in Mumbai and Kolkata and Rs 60 per kg in Chennai. , data showed.

“Tomato prices in Delhi are stable. The prices have risen due to crop damage due to local rains in southern India,” Pandey told reporters.

Actual production and arrivals are higher. There is no problem on the production side, he said, adding that the government has discussed the matter with the states.

“It (prices) should stabilize in the next two weeks,” he said.

The Secretary also mentioned that the production and procurement of onions is also ahead of last year’s schedule.

“We have procured 52,000 tonnes from the rabi season so far, which is much higher than last year’s 30,000 tonnes,” he said.
