Hyderabad:

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Kothapalli Geeta, a former Andhra Pradesh MP, along with her husband and two others last night after they were convicted in a multi-crore bank fraud case.

According to the chargesheet filed by the federal agency in 2015, she and her husband Ramkoteshwar Rao allegedly defrauded Punjab National Bank (PNB) to the tune of Rs 42 crore.

Vishweshwar Infrastructure, whose managing director was Mr. Rao, had taken a loan of Rs 25 crore from PNB and the loan amount increased to Rs 42 crore. On the bank’s complaint, Mr. Rao was questioned by the CBI and a charge sheet was filed in 2015. Ms. Geeta was found to be transferring funds from the company to another account.

After his arrest in Hyderabad, he was shifted to Bengaluru.

Ms. Geeta was elected on a YSR Congress ticket in 2014 from the Araku parliamentary constituency reserved for the Scheduled Tribes (ST). Subsequently, she was accused of cheating as she did not belong to the community. She joined BJP in 2019.
