Patel was taken to a private hospital where X-rays and CT scans showed that he had a minor fracture in his left leg.

Former Deputy Chief Minister of Gujarat Nitin Patel suffered a fracture in his left leg on Saturday after a stray cow entered the “Har Ghar Tiranga” procession in Kadi town of Mehsana district. A video of the incident went viral on social media in which a cow is seen running after them and security personnel and others are coming forward to help Patel.

After the incident, Patel found it difficult to stand and walk. He was taken to a private hospital where X-rays and CT scans showed he had a minor fracture in his left leg, he told reporters at his residence in Ahmedabad.

“A large number of people participated in a procession organized by the state BJP at Kadi in Mehsana district to commemorate 75 years of independence,” Patel said. “A tricolor yatra was organized in Kadi in which around 2,000 people participated. It had reached a vegetable market after completing about 70 percent of the distance, when suddenly a cow came running.

“The doctors put a temporary bandage to stabilize the leg and advised me to take rest for 20-25 days,” he said.

Patel was the deputy chief minister and health minister in the previous Vijay Rupani government in the state.

Stray cattle have become a major headache for the administration in many parts of Gujarat. Incidents of people being killed or seriously injured by cattle are regularly reported.

On March 31 this year, the state legislature passed the Gujarat Cattle Control (Maintenance) Bill, 2022 in urban areas to curb the problem in urban areas. But it was stopped after protests from the Maldhari community, whose traditional occupation is animal husbandry.
