Former Karnataka Chief Minister SM Krishna quits active politics

Former Karnataka Chief Minister and BJP leader SM Krishna on Wednesday announced that he is retiring from active politics.

His announcement comes a few months before the assembly elections in Karnataka.

SM Krishna said, “I am 90 years old now, we should be aware of age. You cannot behave like a 50-year-old person at 90. That’s why I am withdrawing from public life.”

With the BJP trying to make inroads in the old Mysuru region – Mandya, the senior leader said, “It does not mean that I will become a complete hermit. If the party or leaders ask for advice on party organisation, I will give that.” Give”

On the reservation politics going on in Karnataka ahead of the elections, Mr. Krishna said, “If you ask about reservation, I will advise you. I will not jump the gun and give advice.

Asked about being sidelined by the party, he said, “There is no question of sidelining me when I choose to retire.”

SM Krishna first became MP from Mandya in 1968. He was with the Congress for more than four decades. He was a Union minister in the cabinet of both Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi and was also a member of Manmohan Singh’s cabinet.

He also served as the State Congress President. Mr Krishna led the Congress to victory in 1999 and served as chief minister till 2004. He also served as the Governor of Maharashtra.

Since 2013 when the Congress came to power in Karnataka, Krishna was upset at being sidelined by Siddaramaiah when he was chief minister. After which he left Congress in 2017 and joined BJP.

Also known as the “Modern Architect of Bengaluru”, he was instrumental in making the city the IT capital of the country.
