Former US Open champion Sam Stosur to retire after Australian Open

After making her Grand Slam debut at the 2002 Australian Open, Sam Stosur reached a career-high ranking of world number four in singles and number one in doubles.

Veteran Sam Stosur said on Sunday that the Australian Open would be her final tournament, ending a 23-year career that saw her win a singles Grand Slam title and seven more in doubles.

The 38-year-old Australian’s biggest moment came when she beat Serena Williams to win a singles title at the 2011 US Open, which she described as the “pinnacle” of her career.

This week will be his 21st Australian Open.

“It was definitely a dream of mine to achieve it, and I did,” she told reporters after her Flushing Meadows victory. “It is a moment I will never forget.

“I’m very fortunate to have so many wonderful memories of the games, the wins, the losses, the journey, on and off the court,” he said at Melbourne Park. ,

After making her Grand Slam debut at the 2002 Australian Open, Stosur reached career-high rankings of world number four in singles and number one in doubles.

She won four Grand Slam women’s doubles titles, most recently with China’s Zhang Shuai at the 2021 US Open, and three mixed doubles titles.

“I didn’t know what I could do,” she said, looking back on her professional debut two decades ago.

“I dreamed of what I wanted to do and I’ve definitely achieved that and more than I ever thought possible. So I can walk away with a lot of pride.”
