Dissatisfaction is rife on Twitter, with the microblog platform’s recent reading restrictions and first verification pricing suddenly pushing users towards alternatives to Meta. In its first 16 years, Twitter gained approximately 250 million daily active users. In less than five days since its launch, Threads has reportedly achieved 100 million sign-ups. Its massive Instagram user base would surely have helped it grow to such numbers so quickly, and if it keeps up this pace, the reigning ‘Blue Bird’ will finally have a worthy rival on its microblog. enough to end the monopoly.

Success in this area is about network effects or passing a point beyond which people feel the need to be on a particular platform because other people are there. Meta’s reach through its other social media networks eases its way in a way that was not available to Twitter’s other challengers. The great irony is that the success of Threads will leave social media as a broader sector even more dominated by Zuckerberg’s company. And this, from a user’s point of view, is not a welcome result.
