Foundation courses included to complete MBBS on time amid less relaxation, late admissions

The new academic session 2021-22 for MBBS courses announced by the National Medical Commission (NMC) will start from February 14. This comes at a time when medical college admissions are already getting delayed. Not only did the NEET counseling process start late due to EWS issue in SC, but now Merit list has also been drawn for counseling Twice by MCC.

In an official notice, the NMC said that there has been a slight delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic in starting the session and the academic course will be completed within the stipulated time period.

In order to do so, NMC has decided to integrate the Foundation Course. Now the foundation course of 11 months will be covered after the normal teaching hours or on weekends and holidays. It has been said in the notice that instead of 13 months, now there will be a course of 11 months.

Holidays have also been cut for first, second and third year students. Hence the post-professional training has been narrowed down to one month and the final exam will be held on June 2026. The internship will be for one year.

The official notice states, “Even though it appears that the duration of the course has been shortened, the actual teaching and training hours have been preserved through absorption of the buffer time available during the course, such as Dedicated one month foundation course and holidays.”

The first professional for MBBS students has been restricted to 11 months instead of the usual 13 months. Each subsequent professional phase of training has been narrowed down to one month. According to NMC, the final professional exam will be conducted in June 2026. The duration of the internship will be for one year.
