Four PIO teens win top US award for young heroes – Times of India

New York: Four Indian-American teenagers have received this award Gloria Barron Award for Young Heroes To bring about positive change in people’s lives, communities and environment.
winners include Karina Samuel17, from Florida; Karun Kaushiko17, from California; Lalita Acharya, 18, from Ohio; And Mr. Nihal Tamanna13, from New Jersey.
Established in 2001 by author TABarron, the Barron Prize is a non-profit organization that annually honors 25 outstanding young leaders aged 8 to 18. The award celebrates inspiring, public-spirited youth from diverse backgrounds across North America.
Each year, the top 15 winners are awarded $10,000 to support their service work or higher education.
Karina Samuel was honored for founding the Florida chapter of Buy By Plastic Bags (BBPB), a student-led nonprofit committed to reducing the amount of plastic on the planet. Over the past three years, it has mobilized over 1,000 volunteers to be involved in more than 175 coastal cleanups across the state.
Karun Kaushik made X-Check-MD, and artificial intelligence (AI) software that can diagnose COVID-19 and pneumonia with 99 percent accuracy in less than a minute.
Lalitya Acharya has invented Nereid – a low-cost, globally applicable device that can detect water contamination within seconds. Her system uses artificial intelligence and can be placed directly into water pipes to detect microbial water contamination in low concentrations before they spread.
Nihal Tamanna’s non-profit organization, Recycle My Battery, installs free battery recycling bins and educates youth and adults about battery recycling. In just three years he has built a team of 220 student volunteers around the world who have recycled nearly 200,000 batteries and educated millions.
Since its inception, the Barron Prize has awarded and supported over half a million dollars to hundreds of young leaders. National Geographic Education FoundationGirl Scouts of the United States, and the National Youth Leadership Council, among other organizations.
