“France is ready”: President Macron offers aid to Turkey, Syria after earthquake

The French President’s relations with Turkish President Erdogan have often been strained.

Paris:

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday that his country is ready to provide emergency aid to Turkey and Syria after an earthquake that killed hundreds in both countries.

“We are receiving horrifying images from Turkey and Syria after an earthquake of unprecedented magnitude,” Macron tweeted.

His relations with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have often been strained, with the French president saying, “France stands ready to provide emergency relief to the population on the ground. Our thoughts are with the bereaved families.”

French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna also said on Twitter that she sent her “sincere condolences” to her Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu, his country and its people.

“France is on their side,” she said.
