Free rides for women on Women’s Day?

To promote public transport among women, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is considering providing free rides for them on Women’s Day. A proposal in this regard has been sent to the state government seeking permission.

BMTC feels that the promotional activity will bring more patronage to the city bus services and boost the image of the corporation.

The BMTC had in August offered free rides for Bengalis who turned 25.

According to estimates, more than 20 lakh women passengers will travel on that day. For this reach-out programme, BMTC will have to generate fare revenue of ₹8.17 crore. At present, on an average, 10.84 lakh women travel in city buses.

BMTC has a fleet of 6,600 buses. Around 29 lakh people in the city depend on city bus services.
