French Open: Relaxed Holger Rune happy to make amends for Australian Open agony after booking quarters berth

By India Today Sports Desk: Holger Rune said that he was determined to not make the same errors in his French Open Round 4 match that he made in the Australian Open. Earlier this year, Rune had a golden chance of serving out the match against Andrey Rublev and qualifying for the quarters at Rod Laver Arena.

However, he ended up losing the match in a thrilling five-setter. Rune lost the match 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-7 (9-11). At Roland Garros, Rune was in a similar position as the fifth set of his fourth-round match against Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo went into a tie-breaker.

This time around, Rune made sure that he won the match and made his way through to the quarters. It took Rune three hours and 59 minutes to win the contest 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (10-7).

Enjoyed every moment: Holger Rune

“I had a heart-breaking loss in Australia, where I had this situation. I served for the match and lost and ended up in a Match Tie-break like this, so actually I told myself when we started the Match Tie-break [today] just to relax and play tennis and enjoy [it],” Rune was quoted as saying in the on-court interview.

“Moments like this stay with you forever, no matter if you win or lose, you just go and enjoy and try to play your best, so I enjoyed every moment,” he stated.

Rune also heaped praise on Cerundolo, who moved to No.20 in the ATP rankings after qualifying for his maiden Grand Slam fourth round.

“He is playing amazing, especially on clay. I think it is a surface that suits his game very well. He has a big forehand, a big swing. So, when he gets the time, as we saw when I was [serving] for the match, he hit two forehand winners and he was just too good. So, credit to him, he is a very nice guy and I wish him all the best,” Rune added.

As far as the 20-year-old Rune is concerned, he will lock horns with World No.4 Casper Ruud in the quarterfinal on Wednesday, May 7. He also became only the second Danish man after Kurt Nelsen to reach multiple Grand Slam quarters.
