French start-up offers green shopping option to reduce plastic waste

To reduce plastic waste, French start-up Jean Boutil is offering consumers the ability to buy its liquid products in bulk via returnable glass bottles. Wines, oils, fruit juices, as well as detergents, shampoos and cleaning solutions… Jean Boutil offers over a hundred liquid products through 450 French grocery stores and supermarkets that have come on board with their eclectic approach. What if a return to the faithful old deposit system was the solution to reducing plastic waste? With its bulk liquid dispenser and its returnable bottles, Jean Boutille is offering a zero waste option for both stores and consumers.

Wholesale shopping is on the right track

Wholesale selling, an effective solution to reduce packaging waste, is growing positively. However, when it comes to liquids, beverages, detergents or beauty products, it is still difficult to do without containers. Luckily, Lille, France-based Jean Boutil came up with a solution in 2014.

A forgotten practice that’s back in business

For founder Gerard Bellet, the deposit system is an emotional reminder of his childhood. “It disappeared without us realizing it, but it is part of our heritage, our recent history, and has a longstanding allure that is responsible for improving our daily lives as well as being an ecological tool.” Jean Bouteille fits into stores with dispensers of oil, wine and vinegar, as well as household and beauty products and more recently beer and even spirits. In exchange for 1-2 euros, store customers get an empty bottle, which they can reuse as much as they want and return it at any time. In this way, they are reducing their waste while saving: in fact the packaging represents 20 to 25% of the final cost value of the product. 450 stores across France have already bought into the concept.
