From Student Center to Manodarpan: Initiatives for Students in Need of Help

Mirroring: The initiative aims to address the psychosocial issues of the students. This includes support and counseling sessions regarding the mental health and wellbeing of students. Students can call on the toll-free national helpline number – 8448440632 for counselling. It also includes a handbook on 21st century life skills for students in schools, colleges and universities. Using the helpline number, they can interact online or chat with a counselor regarding their issues.

While the aim of the guidelines will be to promote physical fitness, sports, emotional and psychological well-being among students, there will be special care for LGBT students, children from rural areas of the country, women, students from different cultural backgrounds and students with special needs.

NCERT Counseling Services for School Children: The initiative was launched in April 2020 to support the mental health of students amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “The pandemic has given rise to strong emotions such as sadness, fear, anxiety, helplessness, uncertainty, loss of interest and hopelessness. To address the mental health concerns of children during and after COVID-19, NCERT announces ‘Counseling Services for School Students’ through its trained counsellors,” reads the official website. Students desirous of seeking guidance may contact the counselors through WhatsApp, mobile number and email address provided region wise on the website. Around 270 counselors in different regions of the country provide counseling sessions free of cost to the students.

Toll-Free Helpline: The UGC had asked higher educational institutions to set up helplines for mental health, psychosocial anxiety and well-being of students. The college was also directed to regularly mentor the students through interactions, appeals through telephone, email and social media platforms. In 2020, a behavioral health, psycho-social toll free helpline (084611007) was also launched by the UGC

Collaboration: Guidance for Children’s Mental Wellbeing: It includes live interactive sessions on mental well being of children. Sessions for class 1 to 12 are telecasted on e-Vidya DTH-TV channels at 12 noon. It was introduced by the government to help students deal with stress and anxiety and includes recorded videos on yoga as well as other digital resources made available on the Diksha platform.

CBSE Initiatives The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has arranged pre-examination and post-result, tele-counselling services for the students. This includes a toll-free helpline number that students can contact and seek help from trained counselors and principals across India as well as in other countries such as Japan, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Nepal and Kuwait. “The toll-free tele helpline on corona virus safety measures was set up by CBSE Provided guidance on preventive care to students as well as the general public and advised them about their fears and concerns. ,

Wellness Material by NCERT: Under the aegis of the School Health Program under Ayushman Bharat, NCERT has developed a comprehensive package known as ‘Training and Resource Material: Health and Well-being of School Going Children’. It includes a specific module on “Emotional Well-being and Mental Health”, with activities related to the mental health and well-being of students and teachers.
